Praying for alternate paths?

Often times a situation comes into somebody's life where prayers are the only hope towards achieving something important in the world. When nothing else seems to work, praying seems to be the last resort.

The concept of praying becomes very ambiguous at times, specially when you have strong belief that things will go on as written in fate or if one believes the saying "what is written will happen". To me, this is somewhat conflicting at times: What'll happen is already written, then why pray? Will prayers lead to alternate paths in life? e.g. if I had to attain a degree and this is written as my fate then whether I work hard and get it with flying colours or I don't work hard and get it for the sake of just getting it, I'll get it.

If I were to do something and its quality depends upon my effort and concentration, then what role does prayer play? Or to be exact of the conflict I am in right now, what if I am not certain of getting something I really want, do the prayers play any role?

It's not certain that: "If you pray for something it's just a matter of time that you'll get it" because of the reason that it might be good for you but not for everyone. Again this is logic and my question still remains the same: What do prayers do?

If we limit this discussion to the result of the prayers as: "I will get it or not" rather than "I will surely get it, but I pray that I get it with lesser obstacles", etc. If we are to think upon whether prayers really make it happen or not, we can come up with the following combinations, after praying:
  • You get it IF you pray, not otherwise
  • You get it regardless of praying
  • You don't get it regardless of praying

The last two combinations are solely based upon logic and prayers don't work. Let's talk about the first one, can this be true? If yes, then this statement: "Whatever happens, happens for the best" becomes false. And if this becomes false, then the alternate path which occurs after human praying is better than the original path. This implies that human path construction is better and leads to a weird state of mind.

Coming back to the last 2 points above and assuming that our last paragraph is just false, then we arrive to a conclusion that praying does nothing. Again, a weird state of mind.

All these questions can be answered if we think of this:

  • This world and its events are based upon humans, but God's intervention is there whenever required. Requirement is posted through praying.
  • There's no such thing as fate, everything is done by humans, except for maybe a few things such as birth & death? Maybe a few more?

Prayers are not the only thing that perplex human mind. The problem is perhaps with human mind itself, which can find things that are beyond comprehension: Godel's Incompleteness Theorem is one example; Theory of Relativity may be another; Quantum Physics is full of such paradoxes.

Just like any theorem proving system being established on some axioms (that are always supposed to be true without questioning their authenticity), we HAVE to accept some belief system as a base. Otherwise, if we start questioning everything, we'll never move forward.

"What can be a good base" would vary slightyly from person to person. I have been thinking of "our ability to control our fate" for the last 7 years. The closest treatment to this topic was your very own article titled "Luck vs. Detail."

More on it sometime later...

After reading ur thoughts regarding fate, i am still confused.if everything is what is fate then why there is effort?and if there is effort
then why there is failure?Where is the fine line from where ur efforts dosen't do anything and ur fate carry on further?while pursuing anything u get confused that will my effort earn me a win or its all in vain and i ll have to face failure bcoz its my fate or when i dont make any effort im pressurised by the thought that if i dont make any effort i wont get anything?

I think prays itself is nothing ... it is belief that you have in God (Allah). If you have belief on Allah, you pray to God. you do preparation, you work hard and then you pray to God.
Results:
Sometime you learned more in failure than sucess. and if you succeded it is efforts/hard working that brought up in the good fruits .... I think it is simple ... we dont need to go in detail paradoxes

I don't think everything is pre-written from the perspective that it can not be changed.
If it can not be changed, then why would we be judged on the judgment day ??
I remember quote from Hazrat Ali (RA) explaining what is fate; he asked the person to lift one leg, he lifted and then asked to lift other one. Surely, he wasn't able to. At this Hazrat Ali (RA) said, lifting one leg is what you can do and lifting other is what you can't do. This is the same case with fate and effort.

I believe this but trying to find some understandable reason which i believe is there :)

Prayer is not only for a situation where nothing else works but it should be a constant state of mind. Islam teaches us that Allah is in control of all situations. So pray and talk to Allah in all conditions, for Allah loves you and loves your prayer. Every situation in life is nothing but a test, to see what you do with the circumstances presented to you.

Belief in Qadr is a fundamental aspect of Islam. But what is Qadr? Everything is not predetermined. You have a choice, every moment of your life. Your actions have consequences both on you and your surroundings. So make the right chances and turn to Allah for guidance at all times.

Khud hi ko kar buland itna ke har taqdeer se pehle,
Khuda bande se khud poche bata teri raza keya hey.

So, your present actions may affect your fate, and your future!
but if you pray there are chances that would go in your favor...
